by - giugno 11, 2021

An arch between the river forest and the sandstone hills

This house, built by the architectural firm Frankie Pappas occupies a unique place in the nature reserve in the Waterberg mountains of South Africa; it is a house that disappears into the landscape among the rocks, the trees and the birds, offering animals, plants and man an equal opportunity to find shelter.

Called the House of the Big Arch, the original idea is to create a connection between the river forest and the sandstone hill, raising the living space to the height of the canopy of the trees, without cutting any of them.

To respect the natural environment, a 3d reconstruction of the entire site was carried out with a laser scanner, so that you could see every tree and every branch and design the building in a digital forest and the house was designed as a long building only 3 meters wide, adapting the volumes of the building to the position and size of the surrounding trees.

The house is made entirely of brick and wood from sustainable cultivation, and is completely self-sufficient.
