L'abete è un albero molto diffuso nelle zone alpine e in tutto il nord Europa; è una specie rustica, sempreverde, dalla crescita veloce, adatta ai rimboschimenti e l’abbattimento non provoca danni ai boschi.

Il legno di abete, in particolare dell’abete rosso è molto utilizzato per le sue caratteristiche peculiari:
Nonsostante sia un legno tenero e con un basso peso specifico, è molto stabile, cioè assorbe poca acqua e quindi si deforma poco al variare della temperatura e dell'umidità, in più, essendo leggero è facilmente trasportabile e lavorabile, essendo un legno resinoso è naturalmente protetto dagli attacchi degli insetti xilofagi.

L’essiccamento è relativamente veloce e non richiede particolari attenzioni.
L’abete trova molteplici applicazioni in edilizia, sia massello che sotto forma di legno lamellare, è un ottimo isolante sia termico che acustico, ha una buona resistenza alla compressione; le sue caratteristiche di elasticità e resistenze lo rendono una scelta ideale per le strutture portanti delle case prefabbricate in legno.

L'abete bianco, ha caratteristiche diverse, è più tenero, ci sono più nodi e va protetto dall'attacco degli insetti e dall'umidità, per questo è meno adatto all'utilizzo in edilizia.

The silver fir, has different characteristics, is more tender, there are more knots and must be protected from attack by insects and moisture, so it is less suitable for use in construction.
